For over a century, a group of figures known as the Midnight Men have acted as symbols of hope for a cynical world. Much to everyone’s surprise, an amoral jewel thief named Barnett Pasternack is about join that old order. Pasternack’s father was recently slain by the maniac called “the Surgeon”—known for his propensity for removing his victims’ thyroid glands. Meanwhile, Pasternack had been furthering his career by signing on to steal one of the legendary Fabergé eggs. With the egg in hand, however, Pasternack discovers it contains a piece of microfilm—part of a formula for eternal youth. But, as the last of the Midnight Men reveals to Barnett, to make the formula, you need massive doses of thyroid gland extract. Horrified, Pasternack realizes that his father was killed to fulfill his employer’s mad plans. Thus Barnett leaves his life a thief…and begins anew as a Midnight Man.
