Marvel’s Civil War event caused a political and philosophical rift among the super-hero community. The impact of this episode most severely affected the ranks of the Avengers, which had proponents on both sides. After the dust had settled, two teams claimed the title, Avengers as long as we don’t count The Young Avengers and the Illuminati, which also include Avengers in its title.
This title, The Mighty Avengers, led by Ms. Marvel, consists of heroes hand-picked by Tony Stark, whose side won the Civil War. They are, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Wonder Man, The Wasp, The Black Widow, Ares, and The Sentry. As far as the world is concerned, they are the official Avengers. The other Avengers title, The New Avengers, which was the revamped, rebooted Avengers title after the Avengers Dissasembled story arc; consist of heroes like Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Wolverine. They opposed the Super-Hero Registration Act that precipitated the Civil War, and are essentially an unofficial, underground group. The Mighty Avengers is a group that was selected to fill a specific need and whose roster was designed rather than left to the haphazard whims of chance. Time will tell if such a purposeful plan will produce a cohesive team.
