The multi-talented Todd McFarlane broke into the comic “big time” at Marvel, bringing his dynamic writing and artistry to a number of titles, most notably the Amazing Spider-Man. Having proved himself, Marvel awarded him his own title, Spider-Man, whose premiere issue was the best-selling comic book of 1991. Eventually, Todd set his sights even higher, leaving Marvel to help found Image Comics. Spawn is McFarlane’s first title at Image. Its title character is a mysterious man, dead for five years, who is brought back to life as a cloaked Hellspawn, or “’Spawn.” In life, he was Al Simmons, but more than that he remembers only in flashes: a wife, the shadowy organization he worked for, and murders… …including his own.
